STUDENTS, staff, and residents gathered at the University of York for a gala celebrating Chinese New Year.

They were joined by members of the Consulate General of China and York’s Civic Party at the University’s Central Hall.

Welcoming the Year Of The Horse, Monday night’s event featured music played on traditional Chinese instruments and a calligraphy show.

It also showcased xiangsheng or “crosstalk”, one of China’s most popular performing arts and a traditional form of comedy which normally features a rapid, bantering dialogue between two people.

The gala was the Chinese community’s biggest annual event in York, providing a chance for students and local residents to discover more about Chinese culture, and help York’s 1,500 Chinese students feel at home.

The gala was organised by the York Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) in partnership with the University of York’s Students’ Union and International Students’ Association, and York St John University.

Xinhua Zhang, a PhD student in the Department of Physics and president of the CSSA, said: “Through the CSSA, I am honoured to have the chance to bridge the gaps between the East and the West, and enhance understanding and communication among the young generations by providing unique and attractive programmes and activities, locally and internationally.”
