RECENTLY I was in Paris and Rome and on checking out of the hotel, I was asked to pay a hotel tax of one euro a night or five euros for a longer stay.
I asked who authorised this and was told the local council, to generate money. With the Tour De France coming to York, all the hotel and bed-and-breakfast places will be full, so why can’t the council implement this in York at a £1 per night or £5 for a longer stay.
The money collected could then be used to replace the money lost in cutbacks, ie the welfare budget and libraries.
This could contribute to the council costs in running the city.
