ONE of Britain’s most famous artists is coming to York - and those are the bear facts!

Turner Prize-winning potter Grayson Perry will be visiting the Yorkshire Museum in May, after it won a campaign spearheaded by the visitor attraction’s “Curator of Cuddles”, Padmin the Bear.

It has today been named as one of the winners of the Museums at Night Connect10 competition.

Museums and galleries from across the UK battled it out to secure an appearance from one of ten leading contemporary artists, with more than 60,000 people voting. The Yorkshire Museum was up against three London rivals to lure Grayson Perry.

Gaby Lees, the museum’s assistant curator of art learning, said: “We are absolutely delighted. Our bear campaign really seemed to capture people’s imagination and we would like to thank everybody who voted for us.

"The results show we had almost 5,500 votes, the most any museum has ever got in the history of the Museums at Night competition, and we will now work with Grayson to plan the teddy bear-themed free event in May.”

Nick Stockman, project manager for Museums at Night, said: “The response has been fantastic and the lengths the UK’s museums and galleries have gone to to attract votes has been astonishing.”

The Yorkshire Museum launched a huge online campaign for support and last week staff and Padmin visited The Press for the morning.
