LABOUR MP Hugh Bayley (Boxing clever, letters, December 28) attempts to rewrite history on the disappearing Fishergate post box.
For the record, I have a file of correspondence on the issue including letters between myself, Postwatch and Royal Mail. Initially, Royal Mail said that, in spite of their original pledge, there was "no need" to re-provide a post box as there were others "within 100 metres". (The Press, March 22, 2005).
I have a subsequent letter to me personally from a local business (whose forecourt the box is now sited on) offering this to me as a possible location, and also a copy of the reply to him from the local Royal Mail, thanking him for this offer.
Hugh's representations at the time were welcome, but it is clear to me it was grassroots local activity that secured the site for the box.
