A ROWER from North Yorkshire is close to completing an epic journey across the Atlantic.

Dan Howie, from Northallerton, is about 200 miles from finishing his 3,000-mile row after 50 days at sea with rowing partner Will North. Their families were flying to Antigua to meet them on arrival.

Despite facing some of the worst North Atlantic weather systems in 100 years, capsizing twice, and facing 40ft waves, the crew were leading the pairs race by about 70 miles.

Dan said: “We’ve had a great couple of days, getting into the 200s, seeing whales surround our boat and hearing that our fleet buddies Atlantic Polo and Row2Recovery have arrived safely in English Harbour.

“This, together with the news that we are still leading the pairs race and that our donations are above £100,000, is an incredible boost for us.”

They are raising money for Cancer Research, Leukaemia and Lymphoma and St Anna’s, and will sell their boat at the end of the challenge to help reach their £200,000 target.
