YORK’S ‘big wheel’ has had its ups and downs. For two years, between 2006 and 2008, it proved a hit with locals and tourists alike from its base at the National Railway Museum.

When it returned in December 2011, this time in the grounds of the Royal York Hotel, it was equally popular.

It was what happened in between that got many people in a spin. There were repeated attempts to bring the wheel back to York – and they were repeatedly scuppered because the right location couldn’t be found.

Proposals to site it in the North Street Gardens next to the River Ouse were vetoed on environmental grounds.

The Environment Agency then objected to plans to put it in the St George’s Field car park, because of the risk of floods.

Finally, proposals to put it in a little-used corner of the Museum Gardens were foiled by bats.

Eventually the Royal York Hotel agreed to take it – although even then people living in the Westgate Apartments opposite were less than happy.

Now, a few months after it was dismantled for a second time, there is talk about bringing the wheel back to York again.

It may return to a different location at the NRM. The Press understands the North Street Gardens are also being considered as an option – despite having been rejected once before.

We just hope the right place can be found – and quickly. The wheel is a wonderful addition to York’s skyline, and a hugely popular draw.

How great it would be if it could be here in time for visitors to get a sky-high view of the Tour de France’s Grand Départ.
