A GROUP of students took the honours at Askham Bryan College in a competition to create Tour de France-themed show gardens against the clock.
The college’s Level 2 horticulture, floristry and arboriculture students triumphed over three other teams in the contest and their design, attention to detail and creativity impressed the judges.
Jim Gardiner, a former Askham Bryan student, is now the RHS’s executive vice president and director of horticulture, and judged alongside TV gardener David Domoney, who said: “It’s great to see students at different stages of their learning coming together and sharing their expertise. They’ve all worked together to create some terrific show gardens and the winning garden was super.”
On the same day Adam Robinson, 23, who is studying a foundation degree in horticulture, won the the Northern heat of the Young Horticulturist of the Year competition. He will now go forward to the regional heat where he will fight for a place in the grand final taking place in spring.
