YORK Hospital Radio will celebrate 50 years on the air this weekend.

The radio’s first ever programme – a request show to the former Fulford Maternity and Naburn hospitals – was broadcast in 1964.

Half a century later, volunteer broadcasters are still entertaining listeners at York Hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It broadcasts a mixture of music shows, requests, football commentaries from Bootham Crescent, live broadcasts from the stage of York Theatre Royal and a range of outside broadcasts from other theatres and concert venues.

Events to mark the anniversary include a special live broadcast on Saturday morning from the Yorkshire Museum and a live programme from noon on Sunday featuring members past and present, speaking about their personal memories of their time at the Hospital Radio.
