YORK ‘A’ gave themselves a great chance of winning the Yorkshire Over-55s League division one title after beating Featherstone ‘A’ for the first time in the league in five years.

York had a great spell between the fifth and tenth ends when they moved the aggregate score from 17-16 to 47-27 on their way to a final score of 82-68, picking up 14 points.

Graham Brooke’s away team got off to a brilliant start, leading 17-2 after eight ends, and they never let the advantage go as they won easily 28-11.

Phil Parson’s team were 24-11 down with two ends to play, but helped secure the away aggregate points by scoring a three then a single to finish 24-15.

At home, Graham Instone’s side led Tony Horobin’s team 11-4 after nine ends, then 20-8 with four to play. As expected, Horobin’s side came back, reducing the arrears to six, before an amazing match-winning wood from Instone changed the course of the game.

Six shots down and with the jack tucked away at the back of the head, Instone drew in a perfect wood to take a single and give his side a seven-shot cushion going into the last end, where they picked up another two.

Malcolm Thompson’s side were involved in a close game with John Whitley’s team. They led 14-9 but the visitors won six of the next seven ends to lead 17-15. A single meant there was everything to play for on the last. Unfortunately, the visitors picked up a two and won 19-16.

York ‘A’ are now in second place in the league with three games to play.
