A FEW weeks ago I received a letter from Ryedale District Council requiring me to confirm our entry on the Register of Electors. It is clearly marked, in large font, “Please respond to this form by Monday, February 17”.

This was placed on my “to do” pile. Three weeks later, I received a reminder through the post, also telling me I had to reply by February 17.

On Saturday, I received a home visit from a Ryedale employee to ask why I hadn’t returned the form. When I pointed out I had until February to return the form, she replied: “Yes, everyone’s saying that, but Ryedale have sent us out anyway”. This employee was observed to be driven around the village as she searched for addresses.

What a ludicrous waste of money! Why is this being chased three months before the due date by employees working on a Saturday? Perhaps this explains why Ryedale’s council tax charges are far higher than equivalent bands in neighbouring councils.
