PATIENTS at York Hospital will be able to breathe a little easier after a charity raised more than £2,000 to buy a new ventilator.

The committee of Breathe Easy York donated £2,250 to Ward 34 at the hospital to buy the machine.

A ventilator may be used by patients with serious lung disease or other conditions such as that can affect breathing.

Breathe Easy York raised the funds by organising a number of fundraising events, including a sponsored walk, Doc’s Day, in August in memory of Andrew Tiplady.

Andrew was awaiting a lung transplant when he died in February 2011 at the age of 31 from lung failure due to cystic fibrosis.

Andrew was one of the initial members of the Breathe Easy York committee.

John Hillyer, secretary of Breathe Easy York, said: “The committee is always so happy to be able to support York Hospital so we can make things a little easier for patients who suffer from breathing problems.

“Our group meets regularly at Foxwood Community Centre in Acomb and we always welcome new members.”

Janice Quarton, Respiratory Nurse on Ward 34 said, “We would like to sincerely thank Breathe Easy York for their incredibly generous donation. This additional ventilator will greatly benefit more patients on Ward 34 who need support with their breathing.”
