SOME of Nestlé’s new Wonka chocolate bars pack in 555 calories per 100g (3.53oz), according to the National Obesity Forum.
The Government’s “Responsibility Deal” with confectioners has been branded “hogwash” after the line of calorie-laden chocolate was unveiled.
Nestlé is one of many signed up to the Government’s voluntary scheme to tackle obesity – producers and retailers are encouraged to reduce artificial trans fat, calories and salt in foods and have consistent food labelling.
But the Forum said ministers must consider proper regulation.
Nestlé’s new Wonka chocolate bars contain between 524 and 555 calories per 100g and will be targeted at mothers aged 30 to 45. Comparative bars include – a Galaxy bar (544 calories per 100g) and a Cadbury Dairy Milk (530 per 100g).
A Nestlé spokesman said: “The new Wonka Bars have been introduced as an indulgent treat in a resealable wrapper clearly marked for sharing.”
He said Nestlé took its responsibility to help consumers lead healthier lives seriously, and worked to improve its products nutritionally and enable consumers to make informed food choices.
