ALMOST two million people are expected to take “staycations” in York this year.

A report by hotel chain Travelodge claims more Britons than ever will swap overseas holiday plans for the UK, with York named as the tenth most popular destination in the country.

In a survey, 42 per cent of respondents said they would be travelling to York for a week’s holiday, while 13 per cent would visit for a two-week break to explore the city and surrounding area.

A third of British holidaymakers are including a short break in York as part of a tour around various UK locations.

The study also showed 65 per cent of British adults were choosing to holiday on British shores, an increase from 41 per cent last year, and 35 per cent in 2011.
