NHS postcode lotteries can be iniquitous, but surely they are not as unjust as the age lottery. And it isn’t only the elderly who can be considered unsuitable for surgery. Corey Eastwood needs an operation to allow him to walk unaided, but NICE guidelines say that at 13 years of age he is too old.
Understandably, Corey’s father feels let down by the system, but there is hope at hand from people across the city who are clubbing together to help raise money for a private operation.
They are also helping in other ways and Will says his family now feels supported in more than just financial terms. NHS lotteries may be unfair, but isn’t the wider milk of human kindness an amazing thing?
