A NUMBER of correspondents discussing the various issues of traffic management and cycling in York have cited Oxford amongst the shining examples of cycle friendly cities. But as a regular cyclist, I sound a note of caution.

During one day in Oxford, I saw more inconsiderate, dangerous and illegal cycling than in a whole month of cycling or walking around York. The most notable was a young thug who cycled at break-neck speed along a busy pavement, at dusk, with no lights and managed to barge his way between a bus and the queue of people waiting to board it. And no one batted an eyelid!

Already you can see it in York. Anyone who has to cross the Millennium Bridge in the morning will have noticed a number of cyclists who show total disregard for other users of the bridge, weaving in and out of people or going far too fast.

We have a great cycle network in York and I love the off-road route that takes me to work. However, if we’re not careful York will end up with the same problems as Oxford. Maybe it’s time to deal with that minority before there is a serious accident.
