BAKERS from York will sell special grey cakes as part of a charity event to raise awareness of mental health.
The pop-up event, called The Depressed Cake Shop, will run across the first weekend in August throughout the UK, with events also taking place in San Francisco, Australia and Kuala Lumpur.
Claire Gibb, who organised the York event, said: “I can’t believe how popular the event has been. We’ve been inundated with offers, from local cafes like Pig and Pastry, and Flax and Twine, to independent cake makers.”
Emma Thomas who came up with the original idea said: “It’s a really inspiring project. It’s important to open up a discussion about mental illness as people still see it as a taboo. If someone breaks their arm, you can see it but you can’t with depression. Doing something with cakes makes it visible.”
Depressed Cake Shop York will be at Newgate Market on Saturday, August 3, between 9.30am and 5pm.
