I would to thank all concerned in organising the National Circuit Event in York on Sunday.

We made a day of the whole event and can say that we enjoyed all the racing and appreciated the absolutely huge TV screen set up next to the Minster so that we could see what was happening around the course and watch the final 40+K of ‘Le Tour’ finishing in Paris.

With the amount of work involved, I thought that you would appreciate some feedback from a fan of the sport.

The first point I would like to say is about the marketing. Had I not visited the council website for an unrelated reason, I would not have known about the event at all. When we were travelling into the city on the bus, there were no advertising banners to inform locals or tourists of the racing.

Secondly, there should be more trade stands if possible. We saw Rat Race and Fulford Cycles but nothing from any other local or national cycle retailers.

Finally, from a safety point of view, there is a need to look at where the crossing points on the circuit are located and how they are staffed.

I know York is a busy tourist city as well, and people need to be inside and outside the circuit, but allowing crossings during a race in some circumstances nearly led to crashes.

Please let me assure you that all the people I was with or around thoroughly enjoyed the day.

• MANY of us enjoyed watching the British Cycling National Circuit Race Championship in the city centre on Sunday.

However, judging by the state of some of the roads, particularly Goodramgate, that these superb athletes were asked to race on, one could be forgiven for thinking the National Cyclocross championships would have been a more suitable event.

With all the money the council wastes on pointless consultations and projects, is it really too much to ask to make sure the streets are fit for purpose for such a prestigious event?

To compound this lack of foresight, I had to laugh when the announcer stated: “The Park & Ride is open until 9.30pm, no buses though, just the car parks.”
