YEAR 6 pupils at St Barnabas’ CE School in York opened a pop-up breakfast café to raise money for local charities.

Youngsters set up a Sizzling Sausage Café which served a cooked breakfast in the school hall. Parents were able to buy tickets and the money raised has been donated to the special care baby unit and breast cancer support unit at York Hospital.

The café was part of the school’s mini enterprise scheme which also saw pupils host and prepare a three- course gala dinner with the help of school-dinner chefs.

Teachers at the school started the mini-enterprise scheme to encourage pupils to create business ideas and think about ways to work with the community and charities. Two teams of pupils were given a £25 budget and challenged to make their money grow.

Staff at the school in Leeman Road were impressed with the dedication shown by the pupils and see it as a worthwhile learning experience.

Karen Murrie, Year 6 teaching assistant, said: “The children have worked so hard and have been very enthusiastic throughout this task and should be very proud of themselves.” The pupils raised a total of £435.05 which will go to York Hospital.
