A NORTH Yorkshire council plans to build a new HQ on the site of one of its existing offices after a previous accommodation scheme was abandoned.

Harrogate Borough Council will move forward with proposals to move all employees from its buildings in Crescent Gardens, Scottsdale House, Victoria Park House and Springfield House and create a new base at its Knapping Mount site, saying this would mean large savings.

Council leader Anthony Alton said: “The cost of having a workforce spread over five sites is no longer sustainable -–this is a bold decision and probably the biggest the council has taken since 1974.”

A design brief will be drawn up to allow architects to bid to help the council compile a planning application, after which the authority will consider a “financial options” report and make a final decision on whether to proceed with the scheme.

Previous plans to sell its Crescent Gardens HQ and move into the former North Yorkshire Police station on Great North Road were dropped after the building was given listed status.
