STAN YOUNG (“Not enough cycle racks now”, Letters, July 14) writes about the shortage of cycle parking in the centre of York.
I expect, then, he will share my dismay in learning that City of York Council’s Streetscape Strategy proposes to remove all of the substantial number of cycle stands from Parliament Street. The strategy says they should be relocated “as far as possible” on the edge of the footstreet area.
However, the reason for the shortage of cycle parking in the city centre – as I know from conversations with the relevant council officers – is this: there simply isn’t anywhere to put any more. This being the case, it is impossible to relocate the Parliament Street stands to the edge of the footstreet area.
The existing provision will just be lost and the shortage of cycle parking will become even more acute.
