TWO men were arrested during a raid by immigration officials at a York restaurant.

The raid, on Thursday evening at Mumbai Lounge, an Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant in Fossgate, was an operation to target illegal workers involving Home Office immigration officials and North Yorkshire Police.

Two Bangladeshi men, aged 23 and 32, were arrested and detained, while two other men who ran away were pursued but not caught.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said officers took part in the raid in a support role.

A notice of potential liability was issued to the restaurant owner, who will have to provide proof that correct checks were carried out on the workers. Failure to do so could lead to legal proceedings which might result in fines of up to £10,000.

But Rokib Ali, the restaurant’s owner, said he would produce documentation which would “100 per cent” prove they were working legally.
