A TEAM of district nurses in York have been described as “angels” in their nomination in The Press Community Pride Awards.

Clementhorpe district nurses, who are based at the health centre on Cherry Street, have been nominated for the Health Service Heroes award for the care they provide to patients across the city.

Barbara Pettitt, of Navigation Road, nominated the team who have looked after her husband, John, for the past five years. Mrs Pettitt is now being transferred into the nurses’ care as well, but wrote in her nomination that the team have left her nothing to worry about.

She said: “They are angels, always cheerful and so very caring and have become part of our family. Having the knowledge of the care my husband has from the team, it will make my life easier.”

Community services locality manager, Linda Smith, said: “It is great when patients feel that the nursing teams input is making a difference to them. I am just really pleased for the team. It makes me feel really proud and the team are really worthy of this nomination.”

Meanwhile, a youth football coach who trekked to Everest Base Camp has been nominated for the Sporting Hero award.

Russell Caddy, 66, of Burnholme, has been involved in football for over 30 years, having been a player, a coach and a manager of youth football teams. He is now president of the Heworth Youth Football team for the under 15s.

He was nominated by 86-year-old George Coleman who he gardens for. In his letter of nomination, Mr Coleman wrote: “When he finds out I have nominated him he will shout at me and I will love every minute of it.”

Mr Caddy said: “I am very surprised that someone would think to nominate me and I am really very honoured.”

Joking, he added: “But yes, I probably will shout at him.”

The fitness enthusiast said trekking to Everest Base Camp was an experience which will stay with him forever.

He said: “It was an extremely rewarding experience and something I always say to people that if you go, you will definitely not be disappointed.”
