EMERGENCY services remain at the scene of a chemical spill that has closed the A1 in North Yorkshire.

Two lorries collided between junctions 47 and 48 near Boroughbridge at about 4pm, causing one of them to spill about 300 litres of a sodium hydroxide called Proxel.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The leak has been stemmed and officers remain at the scene and are working to get the road open as soon as possible. In the meantime, drivers are asked to avoid the area."

Police have been working with fire crews to identify the chemical and to clear the road.

One of the drivers was taken to hospital with a hand injury.

Diversions are in place.
