THREE York soldiers are preparing to take a cycling tour around all their regiment’s squadrons in aid of an armed forces charity.
Starting on July 15, Lance Corporal Nat Wainwright and Staff Sergeants Jon Streather and Craig Jackson, all members of Y Squadron of the York-based Queen’s Own Yeomanry, will use the national cycle path network from York to Newcastle and then head to the Scottish towns of Cupar and Ayr before travelling to Northern Ireland.
They will then return to Liverpool and cycle back to York, ending a six-day journey covering 600 miles on mountain bikes to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, the Army’s national good cause.
Lance Cpl Wainwright, 43, said: “We wanted to set ourselves a real challenge and this will certainly fit the bill, as we have to ride between 100 and 130 miles each day and have been training hard with rides of up to 50 miles a day.”
The trio will spend two nights camping on their way around the UK.
Brian de la Haye, of The Soldiers’ Charity, said: “This really is a fantastic example of how soldiers can push the envelope in terms of personal achievement and we are very excited about their challenge and hope they get lots of support and sponsors.”
