BEING honest and talking through your problems are the key to a happy marriage, according to Dennis and Elsie Barton from Woodthorpe, who have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Dennis and Elsie, both 84, met in 1947 and celebrated their Blue Sapphire wedding anniversary on May 1, but waited until yesterday to celebrate with their small army of nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
They met while working in the textile industry in West Yorkshire and “took to each other instantly”, before getting married while Dennis was halfway through his national service.
Following a honeymoon in Cleethorpes they settled in Golcar, in West Yorkshire, and had five children.
When Dennis was made redundant from his job working on the railway in Huddersfield, he transferred to York and Elsie got a job at Terry’s. Now they are retired Dennis enjoys making model ships, and Elsie likes playing bingo.
They celebrated with a meal with their family.
