TWO sleeping men had to be rescued by firefighters from a house in Selby after both smoke detectors fitted to the property failed to alert the pair to a fire in the kitchen.
The men were enjoying a lunchtime snooze at the home in Millgate when oil in a frying pan burst into flames.
A neighbour spotted smoke billowing from an upstairs window and dialled 999 shortly after 12.30pm on Saturday.
Two fire engines and more than a dozen fire fighters were called out from Selby fire station – to find the men still asleep in the house, a North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said.
The two men were led to safety and given precautionary check-ups by paramedics, but refused to go to hospital.
Checks by the fire service revealed one smoke alarm was out of action and a second one was not loud enough to alert the residents to what was happening, the spokesman said.
He said: “Crews fitted two new smoke alarms in the property as the ones in the property were not working properly.”
