GLADYS Turton is today celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends.
Great-grandmother Mrs Turton, of Foxwood Lane, will mark her milestone birthday with a meal out with her daughter and family visiting from South Africa and the UK including grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Born in St Albans, Mrs Turton met and married her late husband Arthur in the 1930s, and the couple moved to York with his work as an accountant for railway hotels.
The couple were founders of York Indoor Bowls Club, which was a long standing hobby for them both.
They had a daughter, Pat Standfest, 69, who now lives in South Africa and has had three children and has eight grandchildren.
When asked how it felt to celebrate such a landmark birthday Mrs Turton joked “terrible” but said the secret to her long and happy life was “more luck than judgement”.
