A BREWERY has shown its support for York’s men-only 5K run by brewing two casks of beer with the same name as the race.

John Lewis and Jane Blackman, who run Treboom Brewery in Shiptonthorpe, have created a special edition ale to refresh participants who drop by for well-earned pint at The Slip Inn following the ‘‘R U Taking the P?’’ race.

The beer, which takes its name from the race, is a copper- coloured best bitter brewed using Cascade hops to give it a distinct fruity flavour and then dry hopped with Styrian Goldings for a spicy finish.

Proceeds from its sale will go to prostate cancer research. R U Taking the P?, which takes place at Rowntree Park on Father’s Day, raises money for Professor Norman Maitland and his team at the YCR Cancer Research Unit at the University of York, who are world leaders in the field of prostate cancer research and are funded by the charity Yorkshire Cancer Research.

The event also aims to raise awareness of prostate cancer symptoms so the disease can be detected at an early stage.

Mr Blackman is a former cancer research scientist and worked in Prof Maitland’s laboratory for six years before embarking on his dream to run a microbrewery.

He is also a friend of event organiser Brian Hughes, who started R U Taking the P? four years ago and has since helped to raise an incredible £38,000.

He said: “We are delighted to be able to support this extremely important event, particularly because of the personal connections we have with Brian Hughes and the Yorkshire Cancer Research Unit.

‘‘The run does a great deal to highlight prostate cancer and we hope it will be successful in raising funds for this vital area of research.”

R U Taking the P? takes place on Sunday, June 16 at 9.30am.
