IN The Press supplement for the Visit York Tourism Awards 2013, published on May 10, yet again the statement is made that last year’s wonderful Mystery Plays were “the first Mystery Plays in a dozen years”.
The last static plays were moulded by Greg Doran into the spectacular Millennium production in the Minster, in 2000. But wagon plays have been organised by the Guilds and performed by various community groups in York’s streets in 2002, 2006 and 2010. This is actually the original way of performing the Plays.
Why give the static play such dominance?
Both forms are fantastic to watch and prove the sense of drama of York’s citizens.
The Guild plays will be performed again on wagons on July 13 and 20, 2014.
