HEALTH chiefs in Ryedale said they are committed to reinstating Malton Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) during the daytime at weekends.

NHS Scarborough and Ryedale Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) gave the pledge following a four-week public consultation over opening hours at the facility.

Simon Cox, the CCG’s accountable officer, said: “Although we have yet to reach a final decision around the finer detail for the provision of the MIU, I am pleased we are able to commit to reinstating the MIU service at weekends as this was the main concern raised by members of the public. We will endeavour to reach an agreement and implement it as soon as possible.”

The timing of the change to opening hours has yet to be agreed but should see the unit open during the day, seven days a week, although it will remain closed on evenings when less patients access the service. Mr Cox said: “Another significant issue identified by the survey was that patients are unclear about what the MIU is actually there to do and what types of illness and injury it is able to treat.

“It is therefore essential that our CCG responds to this issue and we will be launching a further piece of work to ensure people have access to information about the health services available to them and when to use them.”
