A YORK man has run the London Marathon in recognition of his partner’s battle against cancer James Howard, 40, of Huntington, ran the marathon in honour of his partner and mum of his three children Beverley Allott, who is in recovery following cancer treatment.

Ms Allott, 32, who was diagnosed with cervical cancer soon after running last year’s London Marathon, was at the finish line with their four-year-old daughter, Lilly, to cheer him over the finish line.

She has gone through months of treatment and is now in recovery, Mr Howard said. Mr Howard, who has so far raised £1,200 for Children With Cancer, said: “I felt really good and really quite emotional to finish. It was an amazing day.”

He finished in five hours and four minutes.

Tsunami survivor Greg Harrand completed the London Marathon to raise money for the British Red Cross. Greg, who runs the Hedley House Hotel in York, was caught up in the 2004 tsunami on his honeymoon at Ko Phi Phi, Thailand.

On Sunday, he crossed the finish line of the 26-mile race in four hours, 43 minutes and 36 seconds, and raised £2,589.97 for the charity. An injured runner from York managed to complete the London Marathon in memory of three-year-old Alfie Oliver, despite running with an injury.

Helen Stothard, from Strensall, suffered an injury to her leg while training in icy weather, but was determined to complete the marathon in memory of Alfie Oliver, who died last June following a battle with serious heart and lung problems.

Despite her injury, Helen, 43, completed the marathon on Sunday in six hours, 32 minutes and 35 seconds, and raised more than £1,100 for Martin House Childrens Hospice.
