BOOTHAM ‘B’ overcame all the odds to defeat Malton ‘A’ 4-1 in the final of the York Conservative Clubs’ Kutters & Shannons Team Cup Knockout.

The final was held at Heworth as part of the Faber Shield committee’s end of season presentation evening.

In the opening frame, Bootham’s Adam Scorfield (+49 handicap) made an early 23 break to go 72-0 ahead against Lee Taylor.

Taylor steadily reduced the arrears to trail 78-45. He potted the last red, but needed pink or black plus all the colours to win. He failed to pot the blue and then fouled on the yellow to be 36 adrift.

He gained 16 points from snookers, but accidentally knocked the black in. He potted brown, blue and pink, but got bad position on a frame-tying black, which Scorfield potted to win 96-82.

Bootham’s Chris Dawson (+8 handicap) attacked from the start of the second frame and went 44-11 in front against an out of touch Phil Hart.

Dawson then made a 26 break and Hart conceded at 77-14.

After a slow start in the third frame, Malton’s Simon Weatherill went 59-55 ahead of Ian Robinson (+47 handicap).

The players traded the early colours before Weatherill was left an easy blue and then potted the pink to win 76-63.

Malton’s Dan Pawson (+3 handicap) led Lionel Barnes 23-19 despite giving away 16 points in fouls.

Pawson moved 41-28 in front before Barnes tightened the game to edge ahead for the first time at 45-41.

The Malton player then potted the blue after a Barnes foul to lead 53-51, but Barnes potted the pink and Bootham eventually took the frame on the black.

Bootham’s Paul Scorfield (+7 handicap) had an easy win in the fifth frame, beating Andrew Sherry 48-11.

The remaining games – Dominic Spiteri v Matt Smith and Roger Ward v Paul Mahoney – were not played.

The cup and awards were presented by sponsor Roy Walker, of Kutters & Shannons.

John and Mark Darley presented the Eric Darley Memorial Cup, for the most valuable player in the final, to Taylor for his fightback.

Weatherill’s 98 break earlier in the Carlsberg UK Snooker League campaign earned him the Pasema Paving Highest Break award, while Taylor was runner-up with 76.

• There was a special presentation to Faber Shield committee chairman Colin Robinson, who is planning to take more of a back seat after 22 years in an organisational role.

Secretary Tim Fillingham paid tribute to Robinson’s dedication.
