A Georgian gala brought the past to life at one of York’s attractions as it celebrated a major milestone.

Fairfax House threw a Georgian-style party yesterday evening to mark its 250th anniversary and 30 years as a successful attraction.

The event boasted a feast of 18th-century-inspired food and drink, as well as authentic Georgian entertainment such as dancing and card-playing.

Hannah Phillip, director of Fairfax House, said: “We pride ourselves on giving visitors an authentic experience of the 18th century, so it was very appropriate to mark our 250th anniversary by throwing a truly spectacular night of food, fun and festivity.”

The evening commemorated the lavish party held by Viscount Fairfax in April 1763, celebrating an extensive refurbishment of his new townhouse, Fairfax House, in Castlegate. He invited more than 200 guests to one of the most dazzling social events 18th century York had ever seen.

Hannah said: “Our staff took on Georgian roles for the event, from Viscount Fairfax and his daughter, to the butler and maids. Guests also got into the spirit of things by dressing in 18th-century style.”

The building suffered many years of neglect and decline until its restoration in the 1980s, becoming a popular museum and home to many treasures of York’s past.
