A WOMAN was sexually assaulted in an alleyway off Shambles by a man she met at a salsa dance session, York Crown Court heard.

Nicholas Adlington, prosecuting, claimed Cliter Lemes Do-Amaral, 31, pinned the woman against a wall while he groped her and “made it quite clear he wanted to have sex with her” despite her repeatedly telling him she didn’t want to.

The incident ended when his brother and her friend arrived at the scene.

Afterwards Lemes Do-Amaral texted her with the words “sorry, I was a bit drunk, I hope to see you again.”

Lemes Do-Amaral, 31, of St Andrew Place in central York, denies sexual assault. The Brazilian citizen, who was assisted by a Portuguese interpreter, claimed to police that the sexual activity was consensual.

Opening the prosecution, Mr Adlington said Lemes Do-Amaral and the woman met through a salsa dance organisation and had known each other for several years, but had never been in a relationship.

On Sunday, June 3, last year, she was in Vudu in Swinegate with some friends when Do-Amaral told her he wanted to have sex with her.

“She didn’t take him seriously,” said Mr Adlington.

It was getting light when she left at closing time at 4am. Do-Amaral approached and said he wanted to speak to her. She went with him thinking she would return to her friends “in a matter of minutes”.

They went to Shambles and turned into the alleyway and he sexually assaulted her, alleged the barrister.

“The woman was making it quite clear to the defendant that she wasn’t going to have sex with him and she didn’t consent to this happening,” Mr Adlington added.

When arrested by police seven days later, Do-Amaral made a statement saying that he did tear the woman’s tights and they kissed and touched each other sexually. He claimed all the actions were consensual.

The trial continues.
