IT was slow going for traffic on a main road out of York as an oversized load made its way along the A1079.

Vehicles backed up for more than a mile yesterday as the load, carried by haulage company GCS Johnson, was transported along the road between 9.30am and about 3pm.

The hauliers were accompanied by police motorbike and a police vehicle travelled ahead of the oversized load to alert drivers.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the load consisted of two storage facilities from Portastor in York, which were being delivered to Hull Docks.

Two more of the large loads are expected to take the same route today, so motorists are advised to expect some delays.
