Heworth ARLC Under-15s looked set to claim the Yorkshire Junior League points only to be hauled back in a 14-14 draw with Illingworth amid atrocious weather conditions.

Man-of-the-match Jack Smith put Heworth ahead, Jacob Sunderland goaling, and, although Illingworth responded with a try, the Villagers, showing keen defence and good forward pressure, upped their lead.

Charlie Hill and Rob Kay got the tries, the latter latching onto Lewis Brown’s skilful chip before hacking on three times from half-way and dropping on the ball. However, Illingworth fought back well.

Hard-working Heworth U13s lost 20-10 at Stanningley on a sloping quagmire of a pitch.

Heworth had to defend their own line for long periods and the hosts eventually capitalised. Strong running by Max Carry and Alfie Hancock coupled with astute play by Shay North and Henri Grimbley swung the momentum Heworth’s way but, with conditions deteriorating, Stanningley upped their lead.

Charles Marsh hit back with a long-range solo try, before Shay North broke the line deep in his own half and drew the fullback before feeding the rampaging Jamie Morrison for the try of the game. Heworth, well served by Jake Wright, Josh Johnstone, Cain North, Iain Oakley, Alfie Oliver and Leon Beattie, kept pressing but without further reward.

Both teams’ ball handling was superb as New Earswick U11s took on Stanley Rangers, again in poor conditions.

Luke Prenty was All Blacks’ top tackler and scored two tries, and powerhouse prop Dan Cannon also bagged his first of the season with a powerful drive, twist and roll.

Ben Kennedy took the magic moment award for a superb one-on-one tackle which dislodged the ball and Harvey Turner was the most improved, Lewis Young the man of the match, and Ellena Powell the opposition’s choice of player of the match.

Heworth U10s shared the spoils with Birstall Victoria. Callum Dunmore, Kane Cavanagh and Will Spencer worked tirelessly, well supported by Max Hodgson and Leon Mooring. Jack Young and Cavanagh got the Villagers’ tries.
