POVERTY and inequality are being debated by experts in York today.

The city has been at the centre of this debate since Seebohm Rowntree completed his groundbreaking poverty survey in 1900.

His story will be addressed by Prof Jonathan Bradshaw, from the University of York, at the Priory Street Centre in York.

A new book on the Rowntree family by local author Paul Chrystal will also be launched at the session.

Another York speaker will be Prof Richard Wilkinson, whose book, The Spirit Level, argues greater equality is better for everyone.

The theme of the final speaker, author Stewart Lansley, will be The Costs Of Inequality.

Other sessions will discuss mental health, the 2011 census and the debate whether the 2021 census should be cancelled. You can follow the conference on Twitter, #radstats .
