STUDENTS interested in a career in the media got the chance to talk to the professionals at an event in York.

York St John University and York Museums Trust joined forces with Channel 4 Television to host a 4Talent Day at the Yorkshire Museum yesterday.

Sixteen to 25-year-olds keen to learn about working in the media were offered the opportunity to network with professionals, take part in hands-on workshops and gain an insight into the routes through to work experience placements.

Diane Herbert, Channel 4’s director of human resources, said: “The creative industries have huge potential to provide growth and employment.

“We want to make sure that nobody is excluded from that and this is why we are taking our 4Talent Days to more unexpected places around the UK.

“This year we are looking for new talent with fresh perspectives in places such as York, Sunderland, Aberdeen, Falmouth and more.”

4Talent is working with York Museums Trusts’ Genesis Project, which is committed to helping young people gain professional skills for work in the media and creative industries.

A museums trust spokesman said: “Genesis is about innovative and exciting creative projects, exhibitions, and events which add a contemporary edge to displays and collections of museum objects.

“Anything goes, from films, performance, fashion, music, visual art and more, plus we are always looking for new ideas.

“The work is created as part of professional CV-building experiences for young people aged 14 to 24, students, and the community through working with professionals to develop a wide range of new skills.”

The day in York included four master-class sessions, and Channel 4 employees Alexandra Gwilliam and Brandon O’Keeffe gave a talk on their career journeys which began in their home city of York.
