ROB Kama likes his rugby union and he absolutely loves his rugby league - but neither are his number one passion.

The 27-year-old Fijian flyer, who joined the Knights halfway through last season from York RUFC and quickly became one of the finds of the year, instead says art is his first love.

He said: "For me, it's my life. It's more than just a pastime. A lot of the guys can't really get me.

"I do a lot of artwork and designing. There is a company in the Midlands that I design some rugby stuff for that is trying to get rugby more fashionable, and I'm trying to get him to sell some of the clothes I've designed.

"The reason why I left Fiji was to study as a graphic designer in England but somehow I ended up joining the army.

"I kept painting and even now I am always painting on everything. The boys at the club know me as the guy who paints on all his clothes' - even down to my trainers."

On the pitch, he is just as clear as to where his heart lies. He returned to York RU during the Knights' closed season but now can't wait for the 13-a-side campaign to start.

"I definitely prefer league," said the 27-year-old winger. "Union is good, but there's a bit too much thinking involved and it's quite stop start.

"For me, being a winger, it's my ideal sport really, being able to take the ball and run as hard and as fast as you can.

"I played my last union match a couple of weeks ago and I said to them afterwards to come down to Huntington Stadium if they want to watch a real game of rugby."

As for his first foray into rugby league, he said: "It was a great start for me to come from union and be welcomed by the Knights. It was a big thing for me and I felt that I had a lot to prove. The fact that after a few training sessions they asked me to play was just brilliant.

"I didn't realise they had such a big backing so to play was one of the highlights of my career."

As for this season, he said: "I'm going to take it one step at a time. Last year I came in halfway through so I didn't really know what to expect but now I know what's coming.

"Everyone's fighting for a position. We know that if you get injured, there's going to be someone to fill your place. There's a lot resting on how you perform but I enjoy competition because it makes you better."

As for his personal goals, he kept it simple: "I don't really have a target as such but I want to be as good as (fellow winger) Alex Godfrey - he'll love that I've said that.

"For me, I'm really aiming to be injury free. If I can manage that, everything else will fall into place."
