I AM heartily sick of people whinging about what the council isn't doing for them ("I haven't got a life in this flat. I am stuck here" - Press, November 6) Has Tamara Kennard not heard about family planning? How irresponsible to bring three children into the world without the proper environment to house them. Does her partner have any role to play apart from the odd visit?

The problem belongs to this feckless couple and not the council or myself as a tax and rate payer.

Perhaps she or her partner should get work, or if they have it, better jobs or overtime and pay a private landlord for accommodation more suitable to their needs and family aspirations.

My daughter is 23. She and her husband are expecting their first child. They both work full-time. Because they took the old-fashioned responsible route, council housing was not available to them and they pay £600 a month for a rented flat in the private sector.

Yes, it has one bedroom, a long flight of stairs and no lift. They will manage together, however, without making unreasonable demands on anyone else or bleating about their lot in life. They will also plan any subsequent family additions carefully, to ensure that they have the right space and resources to look after another child properly.

It's called being a responsible adult. Perhaps Ms Kennard and partner should give it a try.
