Cycling company offers Tour de France themed holidays in Yorkshire

A YORK-based cycling company has adopted a Tour de France theme for a family-focused cycling holiday around Yorkshire.

The trips, organised by Scoot Cycling Holidays, last four to five days and allow families to experience the Tour de France routes, to celebrate the event coming to Yorkshire.

The cycling trip is flexible, allowing the cyclists to experience other tourist attractions along the route, such as visiting York Minster.

Anyone taking part will also receive a yellow T-shirt, proclaiming that they have “Scooted the Tour in Yorkshire”.

Cai Mallett, owner, said: “The arrival of the Tour de France to Yorkshire is great for the county and a fantastic opportunity for us to enable visitors to experience some of the amazing sites in Yorkshire from the saddle of a bike.”

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “I am delighted that tourism businesses in Yorkshire have seized the opportunities that Le Grand Départ offers the county.

“We look forward to welcoming families to experience the wonderful sights associated with the stages of the Tour de France in Yorkshire.”

Cycling themed holidays? I bet these people are a real scream! How sad does it get? It's not even a good spectator sport on tv so what do you get from seeing a spandex wearing drug cheat cycle past you at speed?

Not one I'd recommend. Fine if the roads are closed as they will be for the TdF but too much is on major roads for a cycling holiday. Much better routes to follow in Yorkshire than this one.

Are you suggesting that drug abuse is widespread among professional cyclists?

Good luck with that! Lots of high fences and yellow signs saying "cycles required to dismount". Oh yeah, proper cycling trip that is when you have to get off and walk because some contractor can't do the job properly in two stages to keep the carriageway open and instead closes it all off in a bulk job. When I went past today all they'd done is put a couple of rocks in the now fenced-off carriageway....

On you right you can see the rear wheel of a Raleigh folding cycle sticking out of the River Foss, whilst on your left is a cyclist riding in the dark without lights. Some of you might have noticed a couple of minutes ago that we passed a cyclist and a car driver fighting at the traffic light after the cyclist passed through on a red light. Please do take a leaflet for next years tour, which will include a visit to York Cemetery where we will visit the graves of several cyclists who have been killed whilst carrying pillions or overloaded with bags of shopping from the Sainsburys supermarket.
