DESPITE the Ouse having risen three feet overnight, Trevor Hewitt (Wibsey Sensas) managed to take the 71-peg Hammond Trophy, fished between Hunters Lodge and Linton, with a respectable haul of silver fish.

Drawn on the shallows at Linton he opted for a stick and maggot attack, despite the extra water, and was rewarded with an early chub of around 2lbs.

As the day progressed he tempted a steady stream of small dace and roach to finish well ahead of the pack on 9lb 7oz.

Most of the other money winners had a bream in their nets and that included runner-up Graham Austin (Selby) who tempted a 5lb slab plus roach on a caster feeder from the middle field at Linton for his 6lb 7oz.

Peter Hyde (Leeds Angling Centre) had the best roach haul of the day with his 6lb 3oz net taken from the top of the Linton stretch on pole and maggot.

Others: Trevor Wheatley (Glen) 5-12-0, Darren Hutchinson (Leeds Angling Centre) 5-10-0, Andy Hampson (Leeds Angling Centre) and Steve Fearnley (Leeds Angling Centre) both 4-15-0.

Sunday's 51-peg match at Langwith Lakes developed into a peg by peg battle on Anya's Lake as Tony Lawson at peg 13 and Steve Conlon at 14 went fish for fish for the whole day.

Both men used maggot to beat carp to 2lb but, while eventual winner Lawson worked at 13m tight to the island for his 49lb 10oz, his challenger opted to fish the 6m line. With just eight ounces separating them at the whistle the jury is still out on who took the right option.

Result: 1 Tony Lawson (Spring Valley Waters) 49-10-0, 2 Steve Conlon (Selby) 49-2-0, 3 Darren Watson (West Park) 45-6-0, 4 Kelvin Weatherall (Selby)41-2-0, 5 Dave Templeman (Castleford) 38-9-0, 6 David Banks (West Park) 36-12-0.

Sunday's open at Carpvale saw pegs on Cyprio Lake dominate the 29-peg fifth round of the Bob-Co Winter Series.

Weights suffered as a result of the previous day's downpour with only the smaller residents willing to feed.

Andy Gallant (Bob-Co Tackle) led the way from corner peg three where he offered pole and cat meat tight to the snags.

The dozen carp he extracted scaled a respectable 38lb 10oz. Close by was Graham Boardley (Bob-Co Tackle) who used the same bait on peg one for a similar net that fell just short of the top slot on 34lb 1oz Others: John Fletcher (Ripon) 26-8-0, John Mills (York) 21-4-0 and Dave Spence (York) 16-8-0.
