PUPILS from a Selby area school became hoteliers for the day to raise funds for Children in Need.

Ten youngsters from South Milford Primary School, near Sherburn-in-Elmet, ran the Best Western Milford Hotel for a day.

The three-star hotel invited them round to help boost charity coffers and forge closer community links.

The pupils managed the hotel - under the guiding hand of staff - on Sunday. To raise funds the pupils sold Pudsey Bear biscuits to guests and diners, and management at the hotel donated £1 for every lunch served. All tips left for staff were also donated. It is hoped the initiative will have raised £1,000 in time for the appeal night this Friday.

Shaun Sleath, hotel director, said: "The day was fantastic. The children worked really hard and behaved impeccably. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and gained real work experience."

* Selby College students are gearing up for a day of fun and fundraising in aid of Children In Need on Friday.

They are being urged to donate large sums of money to secure the release of college principal Allan Stewart, who will be "kidnapped" as part of the festivities.

After last year's successful dance-a-thon, the college dance group will be staging a dance medley, and the newly-formed staff band will be entertaining throughout the day. Sports tournaments will also take place at lunchtime.
