WHEN I read your article on the proposed First bus service from York to Leeds Bradford Airport (York, here we come! The Press, November 7), my first reaction was: "Dream on, Councillor Galloway."

The reason that the 757 Leeds Airport service picks up/sets down at all stops is precisely because no one used the previous limited-stop service. Can the councillor really believe that business visitors will fly into the airport, then queue for a bus to York?

The fact that the service will presumably negotiate the A64, A1M and A659 gives it several regular traffic bottlenecks to overcome.

If it goes along the A59 and A658 through Pool-in-Wharfedale, then ditto and likewise, particularly inward to York, inevitably it will queue to get over the A1237.

This road is a nightmare.

When will York councillors press for something to be done about this totally inadequate highway?

When will they stop approving building plans that add to the congestion?

When will the Department for Transport learn that roundabouts add to the congestion if not regulated by traffic lights?

I live in Leeds and visit York often on business. I have to fight my way along the A64, the A1237 or, worse still, through the city in my car because my work takes me to several areas of York in a day and public transport is not an option. Would it be sacrilege to suggest that York's leadership in bus lanes is partially responsible for the traffic chaos on the periphery of the city? It's a pain taking a car into town, so everyone goes to Monks Cross or Clifton Moor. Still, out of site, out of mind. At least York is not blessed with a guided busway; let's be thankful for small mercies. But then, it has ftr.
