THEY had gathered, as they have gathered at 11am every November 11 since the original Armistice Day, at the memorials of York, North and East Yorkshire, to pay their respects to those who gave their lives for their country.
War heroes and heroines, servicemen and women, Scouts, Guides, civic dignitaries, church workers and ordinary members of public, all expressed their gratitude in two minutes of silence, proving that Poppy Day is as potent a gesture as ever.
We will remember them.
