I AGREE that if bin bags are put out too early they will look unsightly and will, of course, be smelly.

But how hypocritical is City of York Council? It will leave a wheely bin for two weeks in hot weather to fester and attract vermin before collecting it then, in winter, we have nothing in our green bin and council workers collect it.

How much money-wasting is that?

I am a big believer in recycling and do my bit, but can the council please listen to what people are saying. Empty our bins every week in summer. I can't be the only one who thinks like this.

A City of York Council spokesperson said: "With the kerbside recycling facilities available to residents receiving alternate weekly collections, as well as the addition of cardboard collections, residents should have enough capacity in their wheeled bin to last for two weeks.

"Many people worry that their bin will become a magnet for flies and other pests during warm weather, but, by adopting the following habits, it is possible to ensure it remains pest and odour-free:

* Wrap food waste before putting it into your bin.

* Uncooked vegetable and fruit waste can be composted at home.

* Store your bin out of direct sunlight.

* Keep the bin lid firmly closed to keep out animals and flies.

* Store your bin away from open windows and doors.

"Refuse sacks left on the street well before collections are much easier for vermin to attack and can lead to unsightly littering problems.

"Many residents will find the continuation of the garden waste collections through the winter beneficial for the woody pruning material not suitable for home composting and also for the disposal of Christmas trees."
