INDUSTRIAL action at GNER's travel centres in York and around the country was dramatically suspended late last night.

Weekend talks between the rail giant and the Transport and Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) union came to a successful conclusion.

The eleventh-hour agreement - said to "satisfy all parties" - must be formally ratified by TSSA members at GNER travel centres over the next seven days, before the action is officially called off.

In the meantime, GNER said its travel centres would continue to operate as normal, and welcomed the outcome of the discussions. A spokesman for the company said it "commended its travel centre staff for their continued professionalism and for maintaining their high service standards while discussions were being held".

Negotiations had continued over the weekend after all-night talks last week failed to resolve the dispute.

The TSSA claimed the York-based company planned to cut the number of ticket office staff at its travel centres. GNER said last night changes would be implemented "gradually over the next five years", and only after further consultation.
