A COLLECTION box destined for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal has been stolen from a York post office.
Paul Abbott, sub-postmaster at Micklegate Post Office said the theft was all the more frightening because the criminals must have used a sharp blade to slash the box's chains. The theft took place while the post office was open, either on Friday night or Saturday morning - only 24 hours before Remembrance Sunday.
Mr Abbott said: "Stealing a poppy box is a despicable act in itself, and they would have had to use a very, very sharp knife to do it. If one of the customers had seen them do it and tried to step in and stop them, the result could have been horrendous."
The box was almost full of donations from post office customers.
