A SUPERSTORE in York is offering free diabetes testing after the latest statistics show shocking levels of ignorance about the disease.

Asda Pharmacy, at Monks Cross shopping park, is offering tests to its customers and 180,000 colleagues nationwide.

The supermarket giant said 55 per cent of Britons said they are not concerned about developing the disease and the store hopes to raise awareness amongst the 13 per cent of people who admitted to not knowing what diabetes was. Many sufferers of the disease also confessed to being confused by their condition.

The tests, which involve blood glucose screening, do not confirm the presence of the disease, however a positive result could indicate the possibility of developing diabetes in the future.

The free screening will be carried out by trained pharmacy staff without appointment.

Deputy superintendent pharmacist, Faisal Tuddy said: “We are testing more than 1,000 shoppers a month and aim to educate people about diabetes and raise awareness.”
