Barbican apartments plan to go on display

NEW plans for hundreds of apartments near York’s Barbican centre will go on show this week.

Persimmon Homes is to unveil fresh proposals for the scheme, which would be built on a patch of land in Paragon Street and also stand next to a new 165-bedroom hotel, at a public exhibition.

Persimmon’s bid for 240 new homes on the site has already been granted by City of York Council, but the land has remained derelict for many years and a new planning application is now expected to be submitted to the authority as fewer apartments will be included and changes to the design have since been made.

A previous scheme put forward by Persimmon for 160 apartments alongside a Golden Tulip hotel was shelved in 2010 when the housing market crashed, leading to the firm going back to the drawing board.

The public consultation event will be held on Thursday at the Melbourne Centre in Escrick Street, between 2pm and 8pm.

Persimmon said it wanted to give residents an opportunity to view and comment on the new proposals for the site.

In 2011, commercial property firm Broadhall secured planning permission from the council for a Hilton Garden Inn hotel next to the portion of land which Persimmon owns, which will be built where the Barbican swimming pool once stood.

The six-storey building will include a restaurant, bar, meeting and functions rooms, a business centre and health and fitness facilities.

Andrew Bowes, Persimmon Homes Yorkshire’s managing director, said: “The Barbican site currently has planning permission for a 240-unit residential apartment scheme.

“The consultation event will display proposed changes to the development, including a reduction in apartments.

“The consultation event is an opportunity for residents to review the proposals and provide comments prior to the submission of a planning application.

“All comments are welcome and our design team will be on hand to assist with any queries.”

Persimmon has previously said it wants to create “high-quality and affordable homes” through the Paragon Street development.

Good luck selling any of them if housing association tenants are pepper potted about the site and a lot of them too.

Just had a virtual trip on Escrick St via Google earth. Can't spot the Melbourne Centre....anyone know where it is?

Might have been easier for the developer to hire the excellent meeting facilities at the nearby Barbican.

It is bizarre that the display isn't at The Barbican. I do with The Melbourne Centre would get some signage sorted out.

Maybe they hid it in the Melbourne Centre to discourage people from attending?

As they're called apartments rather than flats, you can be sure they'll be priced to keep to locals out.

Why can't Persimmon mention the number of apartments they are proposing ? Just saying numbers are reduced, is unhelpful, and gives the impression that they are being unhelpful for a reason ? Is this lazy reporting by the Press, and why didn't they ask for more information ?

They will be priced to sell, and in the current climate/market that is likely to mean they will be cheaper.

Whether Persimmon will build them or not is another matter, and that will no doubt depend on the level of affordable units the council require ?

And going on the original permission there will be a lot of affordable and open space requirements amenity blackmail ! sorry contribution. So what we have here is a pr exercise coming round to getting the council to drop the eronious conditions. Otherwise they are priced out of doing the project.
We will see.

The fact is, that housing in York has not been going to locals, and this is evidenced by the growth of the black and ethnic minority in York. From 2000 to 2012 this increased from around 8,200 to 23,000, an increase of 180%. The increase in the rest of the population (white indigenous) just 5%. The B/E minorities has risen from 4.6% in 2000 to 11.4% in 2012.

This trend will most certainly continue, and is clearly a cause of the growing need for housing throughout the UK. New housing has fallen to it's lowest levels in York last year, and the Council have a massive mess on their hands. Yet all the cabinet member for housing, Coun Tracey Simpson-Laing does is spend her time tweeting about Liverpool FC/the weather/Borgen/party politics, and selling tea ? !!!

Fair point.

They come over here. Nick our jobs. Molest our women. Get given houses for their dozens of kids and relatives. Scrounge off the state. They're smelly. They never wash. Can't speak our language. They are totally uncivilised. They have no right to be here.

Send the lot back I say. Bloody Lancastrians.

Is Glass Houses somewhere near Blubberhouses? If so that's in Yorkshire so people there would be justified in throwing stones at Lancastrians.
